When most of us hear “oxidation” we think of steel rusting or damage to our cells. We then think about free radicals and the need to protect ourselves using “anti”-oxidants. However, when oxidants are used therapeutically to treat a specific condition they can be hugely beneficial. Oxidants are basically electron receptors. Oxygen is the final electron receptor of therapeutically utilized oxidants. Oxygen is the key to life in the cell and therefore facilitates and stimulates the bodies immune system and healing processes while inactivating toxic invaders.

Oxidants are therefor used to safely treat a wide range of conditions ranging from bacterial, viral and fungal infections to joint pain and arthritis. In other countries oxidation therapy is used to treat cancer.

Ozone, (O3), is an energized form of oxygen which contains three atoms of oxygen rather than the two atoms we normally breathe.  Interestingly ozone occurs quite readily in nature, most often as a result of lightning strikes that occur during thunderstorms. In fact the “fresh, clean, spring rain” smell that we notice after a storm most often results from the creation of ozone. However, we are probably most familiar with ozone from reading about the “ozone layer” that encircles the planet above the earth’s atmosphere. Here ozone is created by the sun’s ultraviolet rays. This layer of ozone serves to protect us from ultraviolet radiation.

Ozone is the second most powerful sterilizer in the world and can be used to destroy bacteria, viruses, molds, and odors. It has been used in other countries since the early 1900’s to treat many infections, illnesses, and even for cancer treatments. The third oxygen atom of ozone makes it extremely reactive. This atom readily attaches itself to other molecules. When contaminants such as bacteria, viruses, or molds make contact with ozone, it creates a minuscule hole in the pathogen’s cell wall. Once the cell wall is destroyed, the pathogen will be unable to survive. This process is called “oxidation.” There is no known resistance of any pathogen to the killing power of oxidation, unlike antibiotics and anti-virals that the pathogens have learned to outsmart by changing their structure or function. This makes ozone the perfect healing molecule for many bacterial, viral, or mold and fungal organisms affecting the human body and causing illness. Once Ozone has completed it’s mission it essentially reverts back to oxygen.

2) UVBI or BPT

UVBI or Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation is not new. In the 1920’s a Physicist by the name of Knott developed the treatment process we still use today. This was widely used in American hospitals to treat bacterial, viral, fungal, and other infections before the advent of antibiotics. In the post antibiotic era UVBI unfortunately has fallen out of use. We now have superbugs that are resistant to multiple antibiotics and worse, patients are dying of infections like C. difficile enterocolitis that are the result of destroying the body’s gut immune bacterial flora with wide spectrum antibiotics while we are trying to kill the superbugs.

High dose IV vitamin C has been used to treat infections and boost immunity for many years. It is proven to work through the process of oxidation. It stimulates the production of hydrogen peroxide in the tissues.

Vitamin C (ascorbate, ascorbic acid) has many vital functions in the body. It is a major water-soluble antioxidant that also increases extracellular collagen production and is important for proper immune cell functioning (Hoffman, 1985; Cameron, et al., 1979). It also plays key roles in L-carnitine synthesis, cholesterol metabolism, cytochrome P-450 activity, and neurotransmitter synthesis (Geeraert, 2012).

Vitamin C is water-soluble, and is limited in how well it can be absorbed when given orally. While ascorbate tends to accumulate in adrenal glands, the brain, and in some white blood cell types, plasma levels stay relatively low (Hornig, 1975; Keith & Pelletier, 1974; Ginter, et al., 1979; Kuether, et al., 1988). Data by Levine and coworkers indicate that plasma levels in healthy adults stayed below 100 µM, even if 2.5 grams were taken when administered once daily by the oral route. (Levine, et al., 1996). New liposomal preparations can provide higher serum levels in oral form.

With IV infusion vitamin C peak concentrations over 10 mM can be attained (Casciari, et al., 2001; Padayatty, et al., 2004) without significant adverse effects to the recipient. Vitamin C, at normal physiological concentrations (0.1 mM), is a major water-soluble antioxidant (Geeraert, 2012). At concentrations on the order of 1 mM, however, high dose IV Vit C cause a build-up of hydrogen peroxide, which is preferentially toxic to bacteria, viruses, molds, and tumor cells (Benade, et al., 1969; Riordan, et al., 1995; Casciari, et al., 2001; Chen, et al., 2005; Frei & Lawson, 2008), often leading to appropriate cell death (apoptosis). If abnormal cells do not die appropriately they can continue to grow and become a tumor.
